Redcoats and Revolutionaries

An American War of Independence Re-Enactment Society.

Who are we?

Redcoats and Revolutionaries is a new re-enactment society that portrays the men and women of the American War of Independence (1775-1783). We are based in Leicester, UK.

We hope to assemble a group of individuals with a passion for history to perform in front of crowds at events; everything from presentations to battles. But the main thing is being entertaining whilst being historically accurate. We don’t want 7/8 people standing in a line doing drill all day (though there will be a time and a place for that), we want exciting, exhilarating – living – displays that show the glory and tragedy of this war.

Why this period?

Aside from the brilliant costumes, the incredible tales of heroism, victory, defeat, treachery and loyalty, and not to mention that you’ll get to fire real muskets, there’s also the fact that it is an incredibly important chapter in our history. And one we feel should be more prominent in our collective consciousness.

How does it Work?

First you have to make a choice – Redcoat - that is the line infantry of His Majesty George III’s army (Specifically the 17th Regiment of Foot), or Revolutionary – in this instance a civilian as part of a militia or a smuggler getting arms to the beleaguered continental forces. From there we will tailor scenarios, rehearse them and perform them at events throughout the UK, and perhaps later, abroad.

For a more detailed overview, take a look at 'the first year.'

How much does it cost?

Depending on whether you’d like to be a soldier in His Majesty’s 17th Regiment of Foot or a civilian part of a band of smugglers or militia, the cost can be high. We estimate it will cost around £1100 to be a fully kitted soldier. That’s a pretty big one off cost, but we will help you break this down by opening a kit fund for you and giving back as much as we can from what the society earns from your membership fee and event bookings.

How do I join?

You can join us at our regular monthly meeting, or at any of our events. Alternatively you can download our membership form and send it to us in the post or via email. Please also take a look at our constitution, which includes our aims and objectives and other key information.

Membership costs £30 a year which pays for your Public Liability Insurance and goes towards buying club equipment. There is also an optional kit fund that you can pay into to help spread the cost of getting your kit. We reccomend you put £10-30 a month into this until you have all the kit you need.
